GE Appliances E2

Water Inlet Error

Low severityExpert Guide

What Your Machine Is Actually Telling You

E2 is GE's drain error. The board activated the drain pump but the pressure switch still reads a high water level after the expected drain time (~5 minutes). This means either the pump isn't working, or water can't get out.

GE drain system components:
1. Drain pump — a small electric motor with an impeller that pushes water out through the drain hose.
2. Pump filter/coin trap — a mesh or housing that catches debris before it reaches the pump impeller. On many GE models, this is accessible from the front-bottom.
3. Drain hose — routes from the pump to the standpipe or laundry sink.
4. Check valve (some models) — prevents backflow.

Why E2 is the most common GE error: The drain path accumulates everything that was in pockets: coins, tissues, hairpins, small toys. Additionally, lint and detergent residue build up over time.

Common causes:
1. Pump filter blocked (55%) — foreign objects and lint.
2. Drain hose kinked or clogged (15%) — restricted outflow.
3. Standpipe blockage (10%) — your plumbing is clogged.
4. Pump motor failure (12%) — motor burned out or impeller broken.
5. Pump wiring (8%) — loose connector or broken wire.

GE top-loader vs front-loader: GE makes both types. On top-loaders, the pump filter may not be easily accessible — it's often integrated into the pump housing and requires disassembly. Front-loaders typically have a service panel at the bottom-front.

What You're Probably Seeing Right Now

  • The cycle stopped with standing water in the tub/drum.
  • You hear the drain pump humming but water level isn't dropping — blockage after the pump.
  • The pump is completely silent — pump motor dead.
  • Sour smell from the machine — standing water decomposing.
  • Clothes are soaking wet — spin won't start because drain didn't complete.

DIY Fix — From Easiest to Hardest

1

Emergency Drain (5 minutes)

Get the water out first:

**Front-loaders:** Open the bottom service panel. Use the emergency drain hose (small hose next to the filter) — uncap and drain into a shallow pan.

**Top-loaders:** Place the drain hose into a bucket lower than the machine. Gravity will drain it.

**No emergency drain?** Scoop water out with a cup, or wet-vac.
2

Clean the Pump Filter (10 minutes)

**Fixes ~55% of E2:**

1. Open the service panel or access the filter.
2. Place towels on the floor.
3. Slowly unscrew the filter cap.
4. Pull out all debris — coins, lint, bobby pins, etc.
5. Clean the filter mesh under running water.
6. **Look inside the pump housing** — spin the impeller by hand. Should rotate freely.
7. Check for cracked impeller blades.
8. Reinstall filter, ensuring it's seated properly.
9. Run a drain test.

**On some GE top-loaders:** Access is from behind. Remove the back panel to reach the pump.
3

Check the Drain Hose (5 minutes)

1. Pull machine forward.
2. Check for kinks in the drain hose.
3. Ensure the hose isn't pushed more than 6 inches into the standpipe.
4. Disconnect from standpipe and aim into a bucket — run a drain cycle.
5. **If water flows freely:** Standpipe is clogged.
6. **If no flow:** Blockage in hose or pump.
4

Test the Standpipe (3 minutes)

Pour a bucket of water directly into the standpipe.

**Fast drain** = plumbing fine.
**Slow drain** = standpipe clogged. Use a drain snake or call a plumber.
5

Check Pump Operation (5 minutes)

1. Start a Drain/Spin cycle.
2. listen near the pump — hum or vibration indicates the motor is running.
3. **No sound:** Check pump connector — may have vibrated loose.
4. Reseat the connector.
5. **Still silent:** Pump motor is dead.
6

Replace the Pump (20 minutes)

If pump is confirmed dead:

1. Unplug, disconnect hoses from pump.
2. Remove pump mounting screws (typically 2-3).
3. Disconnect electrical connector.
4. Install new pump — match part to your model number.
5. Reconnect hoses and wiring.
6. Run a drain test.

**GE pump part:** $35-75 depending on model. Available from GE Parts or aftermarket sources.

When to Call a Pro

  • Pump motor dead — pump replacement: $120-$250 installed.
  • Standpipe clogged — plumber: $100-$200.
  • Pump filter access requires disassembly (some top-loaders) — technician: $80-$150.
  • E2 recurring frequently — internal sump hose clogged. Technician: $100-$200.
