KitchenAid Ld

Long Drain

Medium severityExpert Guide

What Your Machine Is Actually Telling You

Ld stands for "Long Drain" — the drain pump ran past its maximum allowed time without the water level reaching "empty." On some KitchenAid models, Ld is used instead of or alongside F02/F21 as the drain timeout code.

Ld vs F02 vs F21:
- Ld = alphanumeric display showing "Long Drain" (some top-loader and newer models).
- F02 = drain time exceeded 8 minutes.
- F21 = general drain fault including electrical.
- All three point to the same root causes.

Why Ld appears on some models: KitchenAid top-loaders and some newer front-loaders use a different error code format. Where a Duet front-loader shows "F02", a KitchenAid top-loader shows "Ld." Same problem, different display.

Common causes:
1. Clogged pump filter/trap (50%) — debris restricting flow.
2. Kinked drain hose (15%) — hose bent or compressed.
3. Standpipe clog (10%) — plumbing issue.
4. Pump motor weakening (10%) — pump can't generate suction.
5. Excessive suds (10%) — suds reduce pumping efficiency.
6. Pressure switch (5%) — falsely reads "full" when tub is empty.

KitchenAid top-loader access: Top-loader pump filters/traps are accessed differently from front-loaders. You may need to tilt the machine and access from below rather than a front service panel.

What You're Probably Seeing Right Now

  • Water still in the tub — not draining or draining very slowly.
  • Pump is running — you can hear it working.
  • Clothes are soaking wet — spin won't start without drain completing.
  • Ld appeared gradually — draining got slower over weeks.
  • Works on small loads but fails on full loads.

DIY Fix — From Easiest to Hardest

1

Emergency Drain (5 minutes)

**Front-loaders:**
1. Open service panel.
2. Use emergency drain hose or slowly open filter.

**Top-loaders:**
1. Lower the drain hose into a bucket on the floor.
2. Gravity drains the tub.
2

Clean the Filter/Trap (10 minutes — Fixes 50%)

**Front-loaders:** Same as F02 — service panel, unscrew filter cap, clean.

**Top-loaders:**
1. May not have an accessible filter.
2. Disconnect drain hose from pump — check for debris.
3. Access from below — tilt machine safely.
4. Check pump impeller — spin by hand.

**Key items:** Coins, socks, hair ties, lint clumps.
3

Check the Drain Hose (5 minutes)

1. Pull machine out.
2. Inspect hose for kinks.
3. Feel for hardened deposits inside.
4. Flush with water if restricted.
5. Ensure proper standpipe insertion depth (3-8 inches).
4

Test the Standpipe (2 minutes)

1. Pour water directly into the standpipe.
2. **Fast drain** = plumbing OK.
3. **Slow or backing up** = plumbing clog. Snake it.
5

Check for Suds Issue

If Ld follows SUD error:

1. Run 2-3 Rinse + Spin cycles.
2. Switch to HE detergent at minimum dose.
3. Run a cleaning cycle with vinegar.
6

Replace the Pump (20 minutes)

If pump sounds weak or is dead:

1. Disconnect hoses and wiring.
2. Remove pump.
3. Install new pump.

**KitchenAid pump:** $35-80.

**Top-loader pumps** may be belt-driven rather than electric. Check your model.

When to Call a Pro

  • Pump dead — replacement: $120-$250 installed.
  • Standpipe clogged — plumber: $100-$200.
  • Internal sump blockage — tub access: $100-$250.
  • Recurring Ld monthly — underlying plumbing or hose issue.
