Maytag F50

Motor Stalled

High severityExpert Guide

What Your Machine Is Actually Telling You

F50 means the MCU is sending power to the motor but the rotor isn't turning. The tachometer confirms zero RPM despite voltage being applied.

Common causes:
1. Overloaded drum (25%) — too heavy to start.
2. Jammed object (20%) — something blocking drum.
3. Motor failure (20%) — windings burned.
4. Drive belt broken (10%) — (belt-drive models only).
5. MCU board (10%) — insufficient power output.
6. Carbon brushes dead (10%) — no contact.
7. Seized bearing (5%) — drum can't turn.

What You're Probably Seeing Right Now

  • Motor hums but drum doesn't move.
  • No sound at all from motor.
  • F50 with heavy load.
  • Drum won't turn by hand — seized.

DIY Fix — From Easiest to Hardest

1

Reduce Load (2 minutes — Fixes 25%)

1. Remove half the clothes.
2. Restart.
3. If clears: overloaded.
2

Try Spinning Drum by Hand (1 minute)

1. Unplug.
2. Open door.
3. Try spinning drum.
4. Spins freely = motor/electrical.
5. Won't spin = jammed or seized bearing.
3

Check for Jammed Objects (10 minutes)

1. Look between drum and gasket.
2. Small items (coins, wires) can jam.
3. Remove back panel to check.
4

Check Belt (Belt-Drive Models)

1. Remove back panel.
2. Check belt tension.
3. Replace if cracked or broken ($10-25).
5

Test Motor (10 minutes)

1. Disconnect motor.
2. Measure windings: 2-8Ω.
3. Ground test: must be OL.
4. Check brushes: min 15mm.
5. Replace if failed ($80-200).

When to Call a Pro

  • Motor — $150-$350.
  • Bearings — $250-$500.
  • MCU — $120-$300.
