Maytag OL

Overloaded

Low severityExpert Guide

What Your Machine Is Actually Telling You

OL (Overload) means the motor is drawing excessive current because the drum is too heavy. The MCU protects the motor by stopping the cycle.

Why overloading matters:
- Excessive motor current → overheating.
- Bearing strain → premature failure.
- Poor wash quality — clothes can't tumble.
- Suspension damage.

Common causes:
1. Too many clothes (70%).
2. Heavy items (15%) — blankets, comforters.
3. Motor weakening (5%) — drawing too much current.
4. MCU sensitivity (5%) — threshold too low.
5. Bearing drag (5%) — worn bearings adding resistance.

What You're Probably Seeing Right Now

  • OL — machine won't start.
  • Drum is packed full.
  • OL with a comforter or blanket.
  • Motor strained or hummed before stopping.

DIY Fix — From Easiest to Hardest

1

Remove Items (2 minutes — Fixes 85%)

1. Remove 1/3 of the clothes.
2. The drum should be no more than 3/4 full.
3. Leave room for clothes to tumble freely.
4. Restart.
2

Split Heavy Items

1. Wash large items alone.
2. Comforters: add 2-3 towels for balance.
3. Don't wash more than one blanket at a time.
3

Check Drum Rotation (If OL With Small Load)

1. Unplug.
2. Open door.
3. Spin drum by hand.
4. Smooth = good.
5. Grinding/stiff = worn bearings.

When to Call a Pro

  • OL with small loads — bearing issue: $250-$500.
  • Motor weakening — $150-$350.
  • Chronic overloading damage — inspection: $80-$120.
