Samsung UE

Unbalanced Load Error

Low severityExpert Guide

What Your Machine Is Actually Telling You

UE (or Ub on newer Samsung models) means the drum load is unevenly distributed. Samsung's VRT (Vibration Reduction Technology) sensor detected excessive vibration during the spin ramp-up and stopped to prevent damage.

How Samsung detects imbalance: The motor accelerates the drum through several speed stages. At each stage, Samsung's MEMS vibration sensor measures the vibration amplitude. If it exceeds the threshold, the machine stops, redistributes (slow back-and-forth), and tries again — up to 3 times. If all 3 attempts fail, UE is displayed.

UE vs Ub:
- Ub = machine is still trying to rebalance (in progress).
- UE = all rebalancing attempts failed (needs your intervention).

Common causes:
1. One heavy item (35%) — single heavy towel, jeans, or bedding.
2. Too few items (20%) — small loads can't distribute evenly.
3. Items tangled together (15%) — knotted into one clump.
4. Machine not level (10%) — washer wobbles, amplifying imbalance.
5. Worn shock absorbers (10%) — can't dampen vibration.
6. Suspension rods broken (5%) — drum hanging unevenly.
7. Shipping bolts still installed (5%) — new machine not properly set up.

What You're Probably Seeing Right Now

  • Machine stopped during spin — won't accelerate past low speed.
  • Loud banging or thumping during spin attempts.
  • You washed a single comforter or duvet.
  • Machine walks across the floor when spinning.
  • UE happens on every load — suspension issue.

DIY Fix — From Easiest to Hardest

1

Redistribute the Load (2 minutes — Fixes 70%)

1. Pause the cycle.
2. Open the door (wait for lock to release).
3. Untangle any knotted items.
4. Spread laundry **evenly around the drum walls.**
5. Mix heavy items with lighter ones.
6. Close door and restart spin.
2

Add or Remove Items (1 minute)

**Too few items:** Add 2-3 towels to provide balance mass.
**Too many items:** Remove 1/3 of the load.
**Single heavy item:** Add companion items of similar weight.
3

Level the Machine (5 minutes — Fixes 10%)

1. Place a spirit level on top of the machine (side to side, AND front to back).
2. Adjust the leveling feet:
- Turn clockwise = lower.
- Turn counterclockwise = raise.
3. Lock the feet with the lock nut.
4. Rock the machine — it should NOT wobble at all.

**Samsung tip:** The anti-vibration pads under each foot should be in place.
4

Check Shipping Bolts (New Machines, 5 minutes)

1. Look at the BACK of the machine.
2. There should be **no large bolts** going through the back panel.
3. If present: remove them immediately with a wrench.
4. Shipping bolts lock the drum for transport — they MUST be removed.
5. Install the provided plastic port covers in the bolt holes.
5

Check Shock Absorbers (10 minutes)

If UE happens on every load regardless of size:

1. Open the door, push down on the drum firmly.
2. Release — drum should bounce back once.
3. Multiple bounces = worn shocks.
4. **Testing:** Tilt machine back, look at the 2 shock absorbers connecting drum to frame.
5. If they're leaking oil or compress too easily: replace.

**Shock absorber kit:** $30-70.
6

Check Suspension Rods (Top-Loaders, 10 minutes)

Top-loader Samsung units use suspension rods:

1. Remove the back or top panel.
2. Inspect the 4 suspension rods.
3. Each should have a spring at the top.
4. If any spring is broken or rod is detached: replace.
5. Kit: $20-50.

When to Call a Pro

  • Shock absorbers/springs — replacement: $80-$200 installed.
  • Drum bearing failure — $250-$500 installed.
  • Spider arm cracked — drum replacement: $200-$450.
  • VRT sensor fault — $80-$180 installed.
