Samsung dC

Door improperly closed

Low severityExpert Guide

What Your Machine Is Actually Telling You

dC (also dC1 on some models) means the door lock switch did not confirm that the door is latched and locked. Samsung won't start ANY cycle until the door lock confirmation signal is received.

Samsung's lock mechanism: When you press Start, a PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) element in the lock heats up, expanding a bi-metal strip that physically pushes a locking pin into place. The confirmation switch then closes, telling the board "door is locked." This takes 5-7 seconds.

dC vs dC1 vs dC3:
- dC = door not closed or lock not engaging.
- dC1 = door opened DURING a cycle.
- dC3 = Add Door feature error (on AddWash models).

Common causes:
1. Door not pushed firmly (35%) — didn't close all the way.
2. Clothes caught in door seal (20%) — fabric preventing full closure.
3. Lock mechanism worn (15%) — PTC element degraded.
4. Door hinge sagging (10%) — strike doesn't reach lock.
5. Wiring to lock (10%) — vibration loosened connector.
6. Main board (5%) — relay not powering the lock.
7. Child lock active (5%) — confusing the user.

What You're Probably Seeing Right Now

  • dC appears instantly after pressing Start.
  • Door looks closed but machine disagrees.
  • You can hear the lock clicking but it won't fully engage.
  • dC appeared after a power outage mid-cycle.
  • The door won't open at all — stuck in a failed lock state.

DIY Fix — From Easiest to Hardest

1

Slam-Close the Door (30 seconds — Fixes 35%)

1. Open the door fully.
2. Check for clothes caught in the door seal.
3. Close the door **firmly** — push at the lock corner.
4. You should hear a solid **click.**
5. Press Start.
2

Check for Obstructions (2 minutes — Fixes 20%)

1. Open door.
2. Run your hand around the entire door rubber gasket.
3. Check the gap between the gasket and the door frame.
4. Remove any trapped fabric, lint, or detergent buildup.
5. Clean the lock slot with a damp cloth.
3

Power Reset (5 minutes)

1. Unplug for 5 minutes.
2. This resets the lock mechanism.
3. Plug back in.
4. Close door, try again.

**Works especially well** after power outages.
4

Check Door Alignment (3 minutes)

1. Close door slowly — watch the strike (hook on door) enter the lock slot.
2. Should slide in straight and centered.
3. If misaligned: tighten the 2-3 hinge screws on the door.
4. If hinges are stripped: use slightly larger screws.
5

Test the Lock Assembly (10 minutes)

1. Unplug.
2. Peel back the gasket retaining wire at the lock area.
3. Remove lock mounting screws (usually 2).
4. Disconnect wiring.
5. Test PTC coil: **800-1500Ω.** OL = dead.
6. Test confirmation switch: should show continuity when pin is pushed.
7. Replace if faulty ($25-50).
6

If Door Is Stuck Locked

If you can't open the door:

1. Unplug for 10 minutes — lock should release.
2. If not: find the emergency release cord.
- **Front-loaders:** Pull down the bottom panel, look for an orange or red pull cord near the lock.
3. Pull to manually release.
4. Replace the lock assembly.

When to Call a Pro

  • Lock assembly replacement — $80-$200 installed.
  • Door hinge repair — $80-$180.
  • Main board relay — $150-$400.
  • AddWash door issue (dC3) — specialized Samsung part.
