Samsung dn

Downloading Software Update

Low severityExpert Guide

What Your Machine Is Actually Telling You

dn is NOT an error code — it's a status indicator meaning "downloading." Your Samsung washer (if Wi-Fi enabled via SmartThings) is receiving a firmware update.

What happens during update:
1. The update downloads via Wi-Fi.
2. The machine installs the new firmware.
3. It restarts automatically.
4. dn disappears and normal operation resumes.

How long does it take: Typically 5-15 minutes depending on update size and Wi-Fi speed.

Why Samsung pushes updates: To fix bugs, improve cycle algorithms, add new wash programs, or patch security vulnerabilities on smart models.

Important: Do NOT unplug or interrupt the machine during a firmware update — this can corrupt the software and brick the control board.

What You're Probably Seeing Right Now

  • "dn" on display — machine won't accept commands.
  • You have a Wi-Fi connected Samsung washer.
  • The SmartThings app may show update in progress.
  • dn appeared on its own — you didn't initiate anything.

What to Do

1

Wait (5-15 minutes — Fixes 99%)

1. Do NOT unplug.
2. Do NOT press any buttons.
3. Wait for the update to complete.
4. The machine will restart automatically.
5. dn will disappear.
2

If dn Is Stuck for Over 30 Minutes

1. Check your Wi-Fi — is the network working?
2. Move the router closer or check signal strength.
3. If Wi-Fi is down: the download may have stalled.
4. Wait for Wi-Fi to restore — update should resume.
5. If still stuck after 1 hour: power cycle (unplug 5 minutes).
3

If Machine Won't Boot After Update (Rare)

If the update corrupted:
1. Unplug for 10 minutes.
2. Plug back in.
3. If the display is blank or shows garbled text: board may need reprogramming.
4. Contact Samsung support — they may be able to push a recovery update.
5. Worst case: main board replacement.
4

Disable Auto-Updates (If Unwanted)

In the SmartThings app:
1. Go to your washer's settings.
2. Look for Firmware/Software Update options.
3. Disable auto-update if you prefer manual control.
4. You can still update manually when convenient.

When to Call a Pro

  • Bricked after update — board reprogramming: $100-$250.
  • Main board corrupted — replacement: $150-$400.
